Here are some attractions that you simply cannot miss at all!
Singapore Zoological Gardens The animal lover must never leave Singapore without a visit to the zoo or the night safari. Beautiful and well maintained gardens house a good variety of animals. See Ah Meng, Singapore's favorite orangutan and take a picture with him. He loves the attention. The night safari is definitely worth a visit too. Take the little train that moves silently among roaming animals. See if you can spot the timid little mouse deer. Whether you're an adult or a kid, you'd absolutely love the zoo here.
Singapore Art Museum If you want to see the creations of talented South East Asian artists, this is the museum to be at. Beautiful paintings and calligraphy are housed in this beautiful building, once a famous missionary boys' school. Entry is very cheap and definitely value for money. Have a coffee at Olio Dome on the ground floor when you want to rest your weary legs.
Supreme Court Building For those who appreciate good architecture, go see the supreme court building (one of us works work here). This magnificent looking building stands proudly before a lush green Padang (open field). See if you can spot the goddess Justicia near the Supreme Court dome. Walk through the building and appreciate the serenity within. The Padang is a popular site for the famous Singapore National Day Parade. If you're lucky to be in town on 9 August, enjoy the spectacular display of fireworks!!
Raffles Hotel To see another beautiful building, take a five minute walk from the Supreme Court and see Raffles Hotel. This is the oldest hotel in Singapore. Recently renovated, it now looks as gorgeous and grand as ever! Very exclusive and of much historical significance. Enjoy some good local food here for not too local prices. Appreciate the beautiful gardens within the hotel. It would be great if you could afford a stay here during your visit.
Arab Street This little street is filled with interesting stores. Most of them sell beautiful fabric and are owned by enterprising Indians who will help you mix and match fabrics. Buy ethnic materials here at reasonable prices and have them transformed into whatever you want. Even better, have them transformed into an Indian Sari (very elegant Indian traditional outfit for ladies) or a Malay Kebaya (traditional Malay costume for ladies, again very elegant. Helps if you're slim built). Arab street is a good place for souvenirs too. Get your little rattan baskets and racks for a good price. Local decorative items also on sale here. Enjoy the dense cultural atmosphere here. For those who are hungry, the far end of Arab street is THE place for good prawn noodles. Located next to a busy road, you may want to bring your own napkins. Lots of atmosphere, a little bit of dust but ultra delicious prawn noodles that must be sampled if you're in the vicinity.
Little India Located at Serangoon road, this area is the cultural and food center for the Indian community in Singapore. Tourists will definitely find it enthralling. See the wet market and the array of stuff it has to offer. See and dine at the little Indian eateries and stores by the roads. If I am not mistaken there's an antique fan collector's shop in the vicinity. Absolutely fascinating! Mustaffa is around the corner.
Geylang This is Singapore's very own red-light district. Home to many karaoke lounges, this lively road should also be appreciated for what I consider to be its true forte…food! There's a great 24 hour Tau Hueh place which serves great soya bean milk. Have it hot or chilled. Try out the dumplings and fried long dough fritters too. Dip the fritter into your soya bean milk and you will understand why the locals choose to do the same. Nearby is what some consider to be Singapore's best Beef Kuay Teow (flattened white noodles). Not hard to see why. Very smoky atmosphere but the food's worth it!
Chinatown Take the bus or a cab to Chinatown. This area is home to many shopping malls and wet markets…and great food too. Noisy and crowded, but very unique atmosphere. Check out the shops that sell ginseng and Chinese herbs. See if they promise you heightened libido and prosperity! Look out for little Chinese pastry shops that sell good egg-tarts and Soon Kueh (vegetarian style dumplings served with chill, absolutely delicious!). Chinatown has much to offer. You can do your shopping here if Orchard Road proves to be too snobbish or cosmopolitan for your liking.
